Election Results - Day Two
Here's our round-up of the second day of local election results. Some results from last night are already on our earlier article here.
We are now up by around 200 council seats and 3 more councils are under Lib Dem majority control.
In Westmorland & Furness we got some brilliant results. It's a new council made up of the areas that were previously South Lakeland, Eden and Barrow & Furness councils. Of those three we held South Lakeland but did not have a single seat in Barrow so taking control there is a huge Lib Dem win. We finished on 36 seats - up from a notional result of 23 seats - on a 65 seat council.
Last night we won 4 seats on the other new Cumbrian council, Cumberland - up from 2 on notional results.
We also made a gain in Salford and two gains in Trafford. That's on top of last nights pair of gains in Stockport and gain in Oldham.
It's no change in Knowsley, Pendle, Preston, Sefton, Wirral, and St Helens (all up elections on new boundaries but the same number of Lib Dems returned).
Sadly we have a few losses as we finished the night down 3 in Bury.
Overall we finish up 18 council seats in the North West. The Conservatives lost 27 seats in our region and Labour 17.
Further Afield
We gained control in the councils of Gosport, Somerset and Woking. That's in addition to Westmorland & Furness in the North West, and Hull last night.
We have made 20 gains in Scotland under the fair vote system (STV) that we would like to have in place in the rest of the UK. That takes us from 63 to 83 seats across Scotland - up by a third.
There are gains net in Wales too, taking us up 10 to 69 councillors.
We held the elected Mayor post in Watford and increased our majority on the council there too. We also increased our majority on Mole Valley council,
