Conference: Ukraine, Second Homes, Football and more
Lib Dem North West Regional Conference this weekend saw a packed lineup of speakers and overwhelming support for two policy motions.
The war in Ukraine was foremost in attendees' minds, and was discussed in turn by a series of parliamentarians - Lord Storey, Christine Jardine MP, Alistair Carmichael MP and Wendy Chamberlain MP - alongside their wider reports to the conference.
Issues raised in conversation with MPs, Peers and candidates ranged from the danger of big data to electoral reform, and the failure of Northern Powerhouse rail delivery to the canal networks of the North West.
We also heard great reflections on the life and work of Tony Greaves by his fellow Peer, Baroness Pinnock.
Policy debates saw motions passed on supporting the Fair Game football campaign, and reform of the law on second home ownership. The amendment to the second homes motion was clearly defeated.
With an eye to elections ahead of us there was discussion of both the May elections and the way ahead beyond them in selecting candidates for a General Election now likely to be in 2023 or 2024.
