Record-breaking WIN in Tiverton & Honiton

June 24, 2022 8:34 AM

Tiverton and Honiton swing

The Liberal Democrats have gained Tiverton & Honiton in a byelection that breaks records for the biggest majority overturned.

It gained us our 14th MP, Richard Foord. Huge congratulations to him and thanks to everyone who helped in the byelection, and more than 22,000 voters who gave him and us their support.

In his acceptance speech Richard said, "Tonight the people of Tiverton and Honiton have spoken for Britain. They sent a loud and clear message - it is time for Boris Johnson to go."

"Every day Boris Johnson clings to office he brings further shame, chaos and neglect."

It's our third byelection gain this parliament - a year almost to the day since Chesham & Amersham and six months on from North Shropshire.

Previously the highest majority lost at a byelection was 23,972 in Liverpool Wavertree in 1935.

However in Tiverton & Honiton the Tory majority in 2019 was 24,239. That was over Labour though - the Lib Dems were in third place some 27,086 votes behind.

That was turned into a 6,144 majority for the Lib Dems.

With a swing to the Lib Dems of 29.9% it is also one of the biggest byelection swings ever. Richard Foord
