Andy Kelly is a former senior youth worker and was born and raised in Rochdale. He represents his local community as ward councillor in the Milnrow and Newhey area of the town.

In a message to Liberal Democrat members across Greater Manchester Andy Kelly stated that "I am over the moon that you the members have selected me to be your candidate for the Greater Manchester Metro Mayor elections in 2020."

Andy Kelly added that "The Tories are playing parlour games with people's lives and Labour are betraying those they profess to represent - we know it will be the working classes who will bare most of the pain not only of a no-deal Brexit, but of any Brexit. Greater Manchester voters deserve a Mayor who will tackle the damage of Brexit head on. We better representation and above all we need someone who is not afraid to be frank about our future."

This year the Liberal Democrats made huge gains in the local elections, with 700+ gains nationally - the party's best local election results. Many of these gains were in Greater Manchester. Three weeks later Greater Manchester helped elect two Liberal Democrat members of European parliament in the North West, as voters turned away from both Labour and the Conservatives.

Following on from an upturn in the opinion polls and a recent parliamentary by-election win, the Liberal Democrats are in a strong position to take on both Labour and the Conservatives across Greater Manchester heading into 2020.

Andy Kelly highlighted just three of the issues where Labour are failing our metropolis:

  • There is a homelessness crisis across the region directly connected with the housing crisis and the failures of local and national government to build enough houses.
  • The Greater Manchester Strategic Framework is destroying our green spaces buy building expensive houses for wealthy people, whereas what we need is decent housing for all our people.
  • Our police are unable to process criminals due to a failure in new systems. We are paying extra council tax on the back of a promise of more police officers and better infrastructure, but it is plain to see the opposite has happened.

Andy Kelly added that "In the three years since the role of Mayor of Greater Manchester was created we have seen local taxes rise whilst local services decline. Three wasted years, and It is time to ask where these three wasted years have gone."

If you can give one or two hours a week helping me push our message - a message of hope and radicalism - I believe we can do this.
