North West Liberal Democrat MEP becomes Chair of European Parliamentary Committee

July 10, 2019 6:35 PM

Chris DaviesToday, the European Parliament's committees held their constitutive meetings and elected their Chairs.

The Renew Europe Group, which includes the sixteen strong group of Liberal Democrat MEPs has announced that Chris Davies, MEP for North West England will chair the fisheries committee (PECH).

On becoming chair of the fisheries committee, Chris Davies MEP said;

"Fish pay no respect to national boundaries and they didn't vote for Brexit. My aim will be to promote sustainable fishing policies in all of Europe's seas. Building up stocks and giving fishers more fish to catch is the best way of securing a long term future for the industry."

Responding to claims by the Brexit Party that the EU is making it harder for fish to be caught, Chris Davies said.

"In the last few days we've heard the first contribution from the Brexit Party to the European Parliament with Ann Widdecombe complaining about the apparent tyranny of the European Union and then going on to talk about the size of fishing net meshes.

"Many people will be asking the question "What on earth is she going on about?" What seems to be the case is that she is reffering to the technical measures regulation which actually hasn't come into force yet.

"When it does come in to law it doesn't actually specify the size of fishing net meshes, that's up to regional councils, fishermen and representatives of the fishing industry to decide how best to fish in their areas. It allows fishermen right the way across Europe to take control and decide how best to fish in their local areas.

"Ann Widdecombe shows us that the Brexit Party is once again out of its depth and has to find something, no matter how to small to blame Europe for."
