Northern Powerhouse Conference

February 26, 2019 10:22 AM

Northern Powerhouse not Poorhouse

The three Liberal Democrat Regional Parties in the North have been working together on developing a response to the "Northern Powerhouse" by the North for the North.

A key event in the membership policy making process for this is a Consultative Conference "Northern Powerhouse - and Beyond" which will be held on March 15th between 11am-2pm in York ahead of start of the party's Spring Federal Conference.

The Northern Powerhouse is a brilliant piece of branding but its vision of jam, not tomorrow, but by 2050 if we're lucky, is not underpinned by any serious financial commitment.

Our pathetic transport infrastructure is a major contributory cause and the recently launched Transport for the North (TfN) Strategy is an excellent analysis of the investment we need. However this vision of where we might be in thirty years' time also looks distinctly like a detailed picture of where we ought to be right now.

As Liberal Democrats we want to offer a serious alternative to the Tory 'smoke and mirrors' Northern Powerhouse PR exercise, and this policy development process is part of that.
